Project: Coastal Zone Management Plan for the Faial Island

The plan includes an investment of approximately three million euros, but at the public discussion held on Tuesday, those responsible for the Plan made it clear that there is a lack of funds to implement it. The Regional Government started to carry out, in 2005, Coastal Zone Management Plans (POOC) but this work is going to end this year with the Plan for the Faial island, as the other islands already  have their own. The Faial´s POOC expects nearly three million euros of investments for different purposes, from protecting the most dangerous areas to providing infrastructures to other zones, out of which 43 percent would be responsibility of the City Council of Horta. However, in the public session held on Tuesday night, within the scope of the running project’s Public Discussion period, those responsible for the Plan have made it clear about the lack of funds to complete the expected on the Plan. According to Sérgio Barroso, coordinator of the consortium that developed the Plan, at the Steering Committee it was outlined that the current unstable financial conditions do not allow an immediate implementation.
